All about Kavala, East Macedonia.

The Company Ampeloeis SA, new in winemaking, was founded in 2006 by the Tsiolas family. Its name means vineyards in Ancient Greek. The family’s aim is to create prestigious and quality wines. To achieve this aim, it chose experienced and reliable partners, led by the internationally recognized
French oenologist Noel Rabot, who has a 40-year experience in reputed wineries abroad.

The company’s fully trained staff ensures the unit’s proper operation, from the raw materials until the final product reaches the consumer. Essentially, Ampeloeis started its course in the world of winemaking in 2008 with the presentation of its two white wines, Folia and Simfonia, participating in the domestic exhibitions Oinotelia 2008, Dionyseia 2009, and Oenos 2009, where consumers enthusiastically embraced our efforts. As a new company, our philosophy is rich in innovation, as we are the first company in Greece to use glass stoppers instead of cork.

The passion and love of the Tsiolas family for quality wine was ‘‘embodied’’ in an area of 30,000 sq.m. in Folia of Nea Peramos, in Kavala, in a magnificent location at the foot of Mount Symbolo, facing on one end of the horizon Mount Athos and the island of Thassos and on the other the peaks of Mount Pangeo. The winery building occupies 3.600 sq.m., embraced by the surrounding vineyards. Inside the winery, visitors first encounter the reception, followed by the production area, the laboratory and the bottling area. Going down the second level, visitors find the wine-ageing cellar, the wine-tasting room and the storage space. The winery is fully equipped with state-of-the-art machinery,
aiming to ensure the quality and uniqueness of the wines. It features a pneumatic press that allows cold extraction, vertical and horizontal automatic wine-makers, stainless steel fermentation, stabilization, and bottling tanks, a filtration filter, a diatomaceous earth filter and a sophisticated bottling line, as well as an automatic corker and a labelling machine.

The privately-owned vineyards of the Tsiolas family occupy 50,000 sq.m. and are estimated to reach up to 200,000 sq.m. They are located at an altitude of 400-500 meters, spread on the slopes of Mount Symbolo, the home, according to legend, of Dionysus, god of wine and fertility. The local conditions are ideal for the cultivation of quality vines, thanks to the fresh breezes from Strymonikos Bay and the mountain that protects vines from cold winds. The soil is rocky and barren, with high clay content, and sloped, ensuring maximum water drainage. The local climate is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and cool summers, thus ensuring maximum sunshine. Focusing primarily on quality and not quantity, the vineyards are cultivated according to the strict guidelines of experts that support the use of organic products and modern methods of protection in general, which are friendly to the environment and the fruit. These experts are also responsible for the collaborating vineyards, ensuring an equally exceptional quality with that of the Ampeloeis wines.
