At Domaine Karanika we work in harmony with nature to protect the health of people and the earth while producing the finest quality wine.
Our organic vineyards at the Amyndeo plateau in the far North-west of Greece include old to very old Xinomavro vines, the younger Assyrtiko, Cabernet Sauvignon and the almost forgotten Limniona. Our wines range from the sparkling Karanika Brut, our red Xinomavro/Limniona Cabernet blends and our razor-sharp white Assyrtiko to the luscious rose wine from Xinomavro.
Domaine Karanika was founded by Laurens M. Hartman – Karanika and Annette van Kampen. Laurens is the son of a Greek mother and a Dutch father. Both he and his wife Annette have lived alltheir life in the Netherlands and had worked for about 15 years in various management positions in publishing before one day they decided to pursue their dream: to produce top-quality wine. Over the years, they were trained as winemaker, oenologist and vineyardist in Europe and the US. They seriously considered all options, from Australia to Germany, but their love for the amazing Xinomavro variety led them to Amyndeo in Greece.
The vineyards (organic farming)
The old organic or ‘bio’ Xinomavro vineyards are situated at the heart of the Aghios Panteleimonas area.
We are most proud of a 100 year old plot at ‘Sotirtsko’ , ungrafted, of course: a 0,25 hectare vineyard that yields only 500kg of the finest grapes one can imagine. That is not more than 1000 bottles per hectare! From these grapes we produce about 300 bottles of dark, ruby-red, outrageously complex wine that can age for at least 25 years – unless the sparrows hit the vineyard first, like in 2009 and 2010, when they left us with only 25kg of grapes. This vineyard was planted when Greece was still under Turkish occupation, it is at least 150 years old.
Next to this vineyard, where the soil is more sandy, lies a 0,25 hectare, 40-year-old ungrafted Xinomavro site that is perfect for our Terra Levea rose wines.
There are two vineyards (age 25 and 40 years) at Rasto, 0,7 hectares in total. Rasto is the heart of 3000 years of vineyards and winemaking in the area. These grapes are used for our Domaine Karanika Red and Terra Levea Red that are blended with Limniona and a dash of Cabernet.
Then we have the 0,5 hectare xinomavro vineyard at ‘Dromos Lakkias’, near Amyndeon village close to a pine forest. The 25 year old vines are perfect for our sparkling Karanika Brut.
Our last ‘old‘ xinomavro vineyard is a tiny one of 0,1 hectare at Nivigratsko, between Amyndeon and Lake Petres, also used for the Karanika Brut.
Finally we have the vineyard surrounding the winery: 3,0 hectares of Limniona, Assyrtiko and Cabernet near the village of Levea. Heavy alluvial soil, because until 5 decades ago, the shores of Lake Vegoritis stretched until here. We practice biodynamic farming on this vineyard and the adjacent 2,0 hectare of fruit trees and vegetable garden.

2010 Terra Levea Assyrtiko, PGI Florina, 86 points.
Regional: eggplant (melitzanes tiganites), World: sole,
Light gold colored. Nice viscosity. Because of altitude (700m) + late ripening: well developed aroma’s of apricot, lychee and lemon. Lovely fragrance of ripe peach and jasmine leaves. Distinct flavors of lemon, apricot, peach, and some honey. Light/medium bodied. Smooth texture. Satisfiying finish. Very promising (only 6 yrs. since planting..)
Regional: Lobster in lemonsauce (Astakoz), World: Sevruga caviar, swordfish souvlaki (Xifia), spicy grilled shrimps, coquilles.
Bright straw colored. Lasting fine creamy bubbles (manual remuage). Nice symphony of aroma’s like bakers yeast, lemon, peach and apple. Upfront flavors of yeast, green apple and lemon. Some minerality and fine acidity. Playfull light/medium bodied. Thirst-quenching juicy texture. A good lasting finish. Amazing value!

Deep ruby. Medium viscosity. Elegant aroma’s of raspberry, black currant (cassis), plum, cherry, and light toast. Appealing flavors of raspberry, black currant (cassis), dried tomatoes, plum, black olive, and light toast. Mellow acids. Light/medium bodied. Smooth texture. Medium finish.
