All about Ikaria.
The winery, the organic farm and the agrotourist unit were set up by George Karimalis and his wife Eleni when they returned to their native home to dedicate themselves to environmental work on their own land. They live there with their four children.
George is a devoted family man and a generous host. His family have made wine on Ikaria for over 500 years. He is an economist and has worked a lot of years in tourism. He has been trained in organic farming. He is a master of wine since 1995 having trained in Athens over a four year period. Once qualified he retuned with his family to Ikaria and set about restoring the reputation of Ikarian wine. For the past 25 years he is an active member of the environmental movement.
Eleni has been trained as a nursery nurse and also in puppet theatre. For the past 15 years she’s worked on the Mediterranean cooking and, especially, the Greek island cooking.
Both George Karimalis and his wife Eleni are certified organic producers .They are passionate about what makes good wine and good food. Over the past few years, many holidaymakers have enjoyed visiting the winery for a brief tour and a tasting.
The certified organic farm consists of 5 hectares of land most of which surrounds the winery. There you will find part of the vineyards which cover one and a half hectares. Two other smaller vineyards are within a small distance of the main vineyard. The vineyards are planted mainly with local varieties of grapes such as the red Fokiano, Koudouro, Reteno and the white Begleri.
According to its own records, the family has been cultivating vineyards and producing wine for the past five centuries.
George and Eleni started to replant the vineyard gradually in 1993. Adjoining the vineyard are many olive trees, aromatic plants, flowers and vegetable gardens.
All the produce of the farm is certified as organic and used for the visitors of the estate.
The stone-made wine factory was built in 1998 and covers an area of 100 square meters. It uses modern equipment such as stainless steel tanks for fermentation and storage, automatic cooling system for the tanks, bottling machinery etc. It contains 35 oak barrels where we age the red wine.
There are also wooden shelves for horizontal storage of 12000 bottles. The winery is also certified as organic.
