All about Chalkis, Evia.

In 1980 Tasos Sampanis, a Mechanical Engineer, and his wife Elli, created in Ritsona, Avlida, their own winery, wishing to make good use of their vineyards and continue the family’s tradition in winemaking.

Their state-of-the-art winery, situated in the heart of the winemaking zone of Agios Ioannis, Avlida, is 15 km outside the city of Halkida. The tour of the winery begins from the exemplary must room with its “smart” pneumatic presses, stainless steel double wall tanks, and the functional extractors, passes from the isobaric filling line and the air-conditioned ageing cellar with the oak barrels, inside which “rest” the ageing wines. Here one can feel the love and hard work Tasos and Elli Sabanis have put behind this endeavour.

All this led to the acquisition of the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 22000:2005 HACCP as well as the I.F.C.4 (International Food Certificate) for the company with very high marks.

The climate within the broader area is characterized as “Mediterranean” with cold winters, a warm summer and a long dry fall.

The soil is of an average sand-argillaceous type.

The vineyards are semi-mountainous (350-450 meters) and are cooled by the South Euboic Sea. The privately owned vineyards today amount to 28 acres and 15 more acres were added as of the end of 2007.

The grapes grown on the estate are a mixture of indigenous and foreign varieties. Roditis, Malagouzia, Moschofilero,  Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay are the main white varieties, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot the red ones.

Tasos Sabanis, and the people that are participating in the effort to reposition the Estate in the wine market, believe that 2008 and 2009 will be two crucial years for its future course.
